He who hears music, feels his solitude peopled at once.  ~Robert Browning

Petal Song, oil on canvas 77x102 cm (30x40)

……and so I stopped painting the women, because there were no more to paint. Many acquaintances, so few I ever got to know on a personal level, fewer still that actually came into my life and touched my soul and left a footprint.  Well, this wasn’t enough paintings for the gallery owner to choose from for a show…I had to paint a few more.

I decided to paint another composite of people like Pink Petals;  so I stretched a canvas, sketched it out, started to paint and stepped back. The blues were all wrong, too bright. and who was that person……….oh cat fingers, it was me! Not what I wanted to do. Out came the turpentine and off came the paint, at least some of it, it was predacious. I had just about run out of my favorite Payne’s Grey I was using and employed another blue mixed with black and brown.  A bad blue to begin with, it was a dye base color and wanted to stay around.  So I sanded everything down and put a light coat of gesso on top allowing some of the blue to show through and let it dry.

The next day I turned the canvas upside down and I saw the doorway. I began to paint. The only other blue I possessed was a Cobalt Blue which I always had trouble using because it seem to just dissipate into a neutral. That tube had been sitting in my paint cabinet for years. It was the only thing I hand in hand and I did not want to make the 40 minute drive into town just for one tube of paint!  So I mixed it with black and some Burnt Umber and……now, that was working!  Three hours later I said, Hello…..look at you! With the first layer of shape and color, I think I painted a new muse!

Is this how we find a new path with a mistake?  A most curious thought……I was excited for it seems the simplicity of lines have created such a wonderful feeling, I can see at least two more! I have always been so structure oriented, so complex, so serious. Perhaps the time had indeed come to simplify, to lighten up.

So here he is…. playing his magical flute as I dance to the tune with the multitudes that haunt my memories coming to join,  and my dog……… I do love painting this dog.

As an aside, there have been no responses to my queries for part-time work, so I went ahead and filled for early retirement. I have not given up, put out a few more applications, but there had to be some income between now and the whenever.  There are no coincidences in this life and I must believe this is all coming about for a purpose.

All any of can do is let the music play, have a little faith and turn the page!
